Boa Care Sheet

 

SPACE REQUIREMENTS: 

 

These are large snakes (6-7 feet) as adults and they require a lot of space.  We house ours in 6x3x2feet vision cages.

 

 Babies up to one year old can be housed in a 20gal aquarium.

 Sub-adults (2-3 years) need an enclosure at least 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet high

 

SUBSTRATE: 

 

 Aspen shavings

 Coconut fiber

 Cypress bark

 Newspaper

DO NOT USE PINE OR CEDAR SHAVINGS - the oils are dangerous to snakes

 

Keep the substrate dry and clean

 

TEMPERATURE: 

 

Ambient temp of 75*-85*

Basking temp of 95*-100*

Use either under cage heating pad or over cage heat lamp

DO NOT USE HOT ROCKS as these can severely burn the snake.

 

HUMIDITY: 

 

Relative humidity of 60-80%

 

WATER: 

           

Clean water in heavy bowl available at all times

 

FOOD: 

           

 F/T rats of appropriate size no larger than widest area of the snake’s body
